Effective e-mail subject lines

The volume of e-mail received on a daily basis has increased exponentially in recent years. I’ve noticed the most effective messages contain relevant and effective subject lines which make them easier to file, organize and act upon. To help everyone, keep these thoughts in mind when composing an e-mail subject.

Summarize your message

What you write in an e-mail subject is often as important as the e-mail itself. A relevant and on-point subject line will improve response time and allow recipients to easily locate your message and take action (if required). Include keywords or topics. If action is required by a certain date, include it. Recipients should be able to scan the subject line to determine the topic and action required for a given message. See the examples below to get a better understanding of effective e-mail subjects.

Example e-mail subjects

Bad: Important info
Better: Company picnic – Important
Best: Sign-up for company picnic by 9/12

Bad: Meeting
Better: Meeting – XYZ project
Best: Meeting to determine XYZ project launch date

Half-way there

Last week I completed the mid-term for my Programming Fundamentals (Java) course at Longview. This means I’m half-way there. I expected to do better, but the it was also more challenging than I expected. I ended up with an 86% and still have an A in the class. I attribute my success to the excellent instructor. In an informal comparison of a handful of computer-related classes at Longview compared to Johnson County Community College; Longview wins, hands-down.

Camping

Clayton, Jared, Corey, Jason
Jared, Clayton and I met up with Shawn, Jason and Corey at Wallace State Park Friday, Oct 5, 07. We arrived about 7:30 pm which meant we had to set up our tent in the dark. We had a good time.

Happy Birthday to Clayton (and Vodka)

Clayton and John
On Saturday, September 29, 2007, I hosted the second annual Happy Birthday to Clayton (and Vokda) party. Clayton and Vodka have enjoyed a shared birthday for the past two years in which we’ve celebrated with vodka libations, snacks and crazy dancing at my house. It was a perfect turn out and the weather made it nice enough to enjoy some fresh air on my front deck. I’ll post a few party pics later today.

My youngest brother, Blake in Kansas City

Blake and Garrett
My youngest brother, Blake was in Kansas City from Hutchinson, KS for the weekend. We checked out several popular Kansas City and suburban destinations. My friend Jared came along on Sunday while we checked out Union Station, downtown and a few overpriced loft developments in the crossroads.
